It will come as no surprise to fans of the show, but I am a huge People Under the Stairs fan, so it was disheartening to hear the sad news of Michael ‘Double K’ Turner’s passing over the weekend. Given this, it was a no-brainer to start out the show paying tribute to Double K with some PUTS.
With that dynamic duo as a jump off, we then spent the rest of the show spotlighting great hip hop duos.
(Almost) All hip hop (almost) all the time for this episode, which features a nice mix of old and brand new tracks, including a few from DJ Cosm’s most excellent release, Natural Within.
Starting out paying our respects to the dearly departed once again this week, which has seemed an all too common occurrence over that last year. Whodini founding member Ecstasy passed away over the holiday break, and I wanted to show our love for one of the early pioneers of the hip hop game. Then a bit more from MF DOOM after last week’s tribute show.
Then into some more classic hip hop before working our way into some trap and 80s synth stuff. Glad I played Chaka Khan’s fantastic I Feel for You as well. The Grammy-winning song was written by Prince and features Melle Mel and harmonica from the one and only Stevie Wonder. The video features dancing from Shabba Doo, who might better be known from his role as Ozone in Breakin’ and Breakin’ 2 and got his start showing off his unique style on Soul Train. Sadly, Adolfo ‘Shabba Doo’ Quinones also just recently passed away right before the new year.
Over the holidays, the rap world was shocked to learn of the passing of MF DOOM two months prior on October 31. This one hit hard, so a tribute show was in order. #RIPMFDOOM
A nice mellow start to this week’s show, then we drop in to some drum’n’bass before getting into some deep house and broken beat for the last bit of the show.
