Lotus Queen in the mix
The Fat Beat Diet, July 15th 2010

This week, CJSW Drum’n’Bass royalty The Lotus Queen steps behind the decks for our ongoing guest mix series. Fat Beat Diet trivia: The Lotus Queen taught me how to fade a song on the radio boards when I first started my DJ training at CJSW over 10 years ago. Her normal gig, Remote Emissions, was already going strong at the time, pointing to the longevity and quality of her show. Taking a break from her usual genre, Lotus takes this opportunity to drop some heavy dubstep sounds.

No tracklist, sorry. Message her if you’re dying to figure out what one of the tracks were, and I’m sure she’ll be happy to give you the info you’re after.

The Fat Beat Diet – June 10, 2010
and June 17th Preview

Continuing on with our guest dj mix series, this week Nathan played host to a dubstep mix from the German duo Sickfile and Seism called “Teen Panty Dropper”. Here it is.

DJ A-Mac on decks for June 17th

On June 17th (Tonight!), Nathan will be hosting local bass-wrecker DJ A-Mac. Andy’s recently mixed the 2nd installment in the Giant 45 Mix series, so expect him to bring some serious heat.

It’s Been A Long Time…

… I shouldn’t have left you
Without a strong rhyme to step to
Think of how many weak shows you slept through
Time’s up, I’m sorry I kept you
Thinking of this, you keep repeating you miss
The rhymes from the microphone soloist
And you sit by the radio, hand on the dial, soon
As you hear it, pump up the volume
Dance wit the speaker ’till you hear it blow,
Then plug in the headphone ’cause here it go

Did I say I’d be back in May? Sorry about that, I must have meant June

Actually, keen listeners will not that even though I’m blogging again, I’m not yet back on the airwaves. I’m actually taking a short break from the radio show. I’ve been doing the Fat Beat Diet non-stop for 9 years now and felt I needed a bit of time off and distance just to make sure that I still want to do the show and would be able to put in the effort which I feel listeners deserve. Short answer, I do and I am, but I’ll still take a few more weeks off doing the show.

In the meantime, 2 things: First of all, for those tuning in live for the radio show, I’m pleased to announce that Nathan, who hosts the show after me – The Twisted Brain Wrong, has stepped up to the plate and is hosting local DJs in my time slot. Every week, a different DJ will take to the 1’s and 2’s and present their take on what DJ culture is about. I’m super stoked about this, and hope that you’ll all tune in. I’ll try and coordinate with Nathan to get the schedule out to you ahead of time, and also throw up some of the featured mixes if possible.

Secondly, I’d hate to think that the 3 of you who regularly check the site are jonesing for mixes, so I’ll try to regularly post new mixes for your listening pleasure. These will likely take the form of snippets of live sets I’ve done, but if there’s some music I really want to get out there, the idea of me making an internet-specific mix is not out of the question.

The first mix is a snippet from my new Fridays at Vicious Circle, Uptown Sound. I’m really starting to like the night, and I’ll probably talk a bit more about it in the coming weeks, but for now I’ll just put the mix out there. It’s a pretty wide ranging mix, musically-speaking, or at least I think so. I’m having a lot of fun recently playing with tempo changes, and I’ve pretty much always liked switching genres, for better and for worse.

The Fat Beat Diet, April 1st

Kinda got behind the 8-ball this week and had to put the show together ahead of time. Must’ve been asleep at the switch though, or else I would have never played Jazzamatazz/Guru’s When You’re Near when I’d already played the same song last week. Oops… According to news reports, Guru’s recently woken from the coma he’s been in for the last little while, stemming from a heart attack, although there are some videos out disputing the ‘official’ line of events. Something rather fishy about the whole thing.

Taking a look at how this show ended up, I should probably give a nod to Skratch Bastid’s 110% mix, who it appears I’ve cribbed liberally from in certain parts of the mix. Totally not on purpose, but given that I’ve been listening to the mix pretty heavily, I shouldn’t be overly surprised that some of the songs from his mix have made it into mine. I hope he doesn’t mind…

The Fat Beat Diet, March 25th 2010

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned it before, but I love, love, love Joy Orbison‘s remix of Four Tet’s Love Cry. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the original as well — the 9 minute buildup is epic — but Joy Orbison’s syncopated reworking turns my crank pretty good. Ditto Astronote’s reworking of Mayer Hawthorne’s Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out. Transit from Colossus originally got on my radar via Mark Farina‘s ever solid Mushroom Jazz series. I’d love to catch a Mark Farina set where he sticks to downtempo rather than house, but sadly I think that’s nothing but a pipe dream . Anyways, I loved the playful bounce of the piano loop, but I think Farina must’ve sped the thing up quite a bit on his mix. The original is languid by comparison. Lovely, nonetheless.

Hip hop fans should definitely take a moment and check out the latest from Jake One and Freeway, The Stimulus Package. Ditto for Metawon’s latest, Choplifter (Calgary Peeps: You can catch me spinning along side Metawon for my boy Lawrence’s birthday party/fundraiser on May 1st. I’ll be wicked jet-lagged. Should be fun!). I should mention that on-air, I mistakenly said Underground Realroad‘s album was self-titled. It isn’t: It’s called Slave to the Game. Oops. Oh well, there’s no talking in this mix, so I don’t have to relive the error over and over…

Here’s the show.

The Fat Beat Diet, March 18th 2010

The genesis of my shows is often pure happenstance, but often it starts with just one song which has crossed my path over the course of the week. Maybe I heard it on a blog or the radio or somewhere, but I just can’t get it out of my head and need to share it and get it out there. This week, that honour falls to the Black Noise remix of Crookers’ dancefloor shaker Business Man. This is definitely something I’ll be saving in the crate for that perfect, peak of the night moment, dropping it on unsuspecting listeners.

Seeing as playing that track on the show would put us in a dancefloor mood, I took the opportunity to play a few other new gems and old favourites. In the latter category, you’ll find the Mat the Alien Remix as well as Diplo’s Spank Rock Remix, which I pretty much loved at first listen 3ish years ago and haven’t stopped loving since. In the former category, chalk one up for Amanda Blank whose music seems to be popping up everywhere these days, making even Mickey D’s semi-palatable.

At the end of the show, I just had to drop Featurecast’s re-edit of Aretha Franklin’s One Step Ahead. I’ve known about the song for a while and love the original, but only just got my hands on this version.

Special Bonus this week: I’ve edited out all my voice-over work, so it’s just 1hr of music. Enjoy!

Ironing out the new time slot wrinkles
The Fat Beat Diet, March 4th and 11th

This new 1hr time slot is taking a bit of getting used to. Thankfully, on the upside, the station got a fancy new mixer, so at least now I don’t have to lug my mixer up to the university. Unfortunately someone at the station keeps on unhooking the outbound RCA cable, which totally throws me off when I go to start the show. On top of that, the USB cable is pretty dodgy. But with two weeks under my belt, I think moving forward I should be able to manage these minor annoyances. Luckily for those just joining us now rather than listening live, through the magic of post-production, you won’t even hear my larger blunders…. Yesss!

I’m also test driving a new music delivery method called SoundCloud here on the site. You’ll still be able to download the mixes as you always have, but I’m adding their player to the site also, so you can listen to the shows right on the page. I’d love to know what you think of it, so drop me a comment or an email if you feel so inclined.

UPDATE, or: Oh right, the music… I figured I should at least take a few words to talk about some of the beats I played on the 11th. It’s a bit old now (A year almost in internet time, that’s like a decade in real life…) but you can find the Manipulated Marauders joints here. Also, you should definitely take a listen to the Dirty Sample stuff over at the always good Neferiu Records site. I’m pretty sure I’ve had Planit, aka Dirty Sample’s previous incarnation, in the studio before — but I’d have to check the archives to make sure. Nonetheless, Dirty Sample is straight up killing it on both of his (FREE!) offerings Sounds and The Perfect Mask. Which should make picking up his latest, Two Blue Apes, a complete no-brainer.

Also, I only played the bridge and end portion of Minnie Ripperton’s Inside My Love, but if you have the chance you really should listen to the whole thing, not to mention the rest of her catalog along with her work with The Rotary Connection. Ripperton reportedly had a more than 5 octave vocal range (take that Mariah Carey), and never needed to resort to crappy vocal tricks and hokey melisma to make a great song.
