Extended edition of the Fat Beat Diet this week as I take over Bassackwards, which usually follows me from midnight until 2:00am. I say usually, but I guess it’s more of a recent development since Post Everything with Stan moved to Monday nights a few weeks ago. Stan’s cool, I’ll miss chatting with him. I think this is the 5th or 6th different show to follow me since I started. I’d make a joke about me being a hard act to follow, but it’s probably just because I smell bad or something.
Anyways, since DJ Pandemic usually plays industrial and metal on his show, I ended up going a bit harder on the latter half of the show. Not sure I managed to please his fans (or mine for that matter), but whatevs: I had fun. So yeah, part 3 is electroclash and dance rock, part 2 is hip hop, and part 1 is mostly downtempo and drum’n’bass.

yep, it’s christmas already. Christmas for the station, anyways. I’ve been going a bit crazy getting the mixes ready for this year’s funding drive. The hip hop mix is looking to be off the hook, and the uptempo mix this year marks the return a few nice house tracks after a couple years of strictly electro CDs. Funny how the pendulum swings sometimes. Take note, these mixes can only be had if you call in your pledge during my show this Thursday October 30th from 10:30 to Midnight MST, or if you pre-pledge via email.
So what’s the deal with CJSW’s Funding Drive anyways? CJSW’s annual funding drive runs Friday October 24th through to the 31st. For one week every year we take a break from being the best radio station in town, and ask you, our listeners, to help us out.
All the money raised during our annual Funding Drive campaign goes towards our capital budget (like it always does), paying for everything from maintaining our fancy new 4000 watt broadcast tower, to our CD players, our headphones, and all the other costs associated with running a radio station.
In the past, CJSW has asked for your support in order to allow us to improve our facilities and move to a new space. We have been saving those funds diligently, and working hard to get into new digs as soon as we can. We have also used funding drive support to improve our web streams and create a new CJSW website, subscribe to new award-winning shows like Democracy Now and Counterspin and develop new initiatives like podcasting.
Thanks to your support, CJSW has expanded its presence in the community as well! CJSW is everywhere! We’re out supporting Calgary’s many festivals and community events, and we’re broadcasting live shows to you from local venues.
Pledging is easy. You can all the pledge line at 403-220-5000 between October 24th and October 31st, or make a donation on-line at www.cjsw.com. Listen to CJSW 90.9 FM and check out www.cjsw.com everyday to find out about all the great swag we have to offer for pledges. Help us reach our goal of $200,000.
Thanks very much for your support!
For the real Fat Beat Diet Enthusiasts, this year’s funding drive mixes will be available for donations of $75. A donation of $150 gets you both discs, as well as a bonus mp3 disc full of special treats. If you’re a regular downloader but don’t listen to the show live on air, feel free to pre-pledge either by sending me an email (Preferred) with your address and phone number and the amount you’d like to pledge, or by donating via paypal on the cjsw site (send along a note that you’re donating specifically to the Fat Beat Diet).
So there’s a point in djing where a mix between starts going bad, and you’re faced with a decision: bail out, or keep going and try to save it. pointer sisters to debarge was definitely one of these. In hindsight, I probably shoulda bailed and started again, but whaddya gonna do? It is live radio after all…
Lots of old and soon-to-be personal favourites in this show.
Funnest show in a while, for me at least. The shows are usually pretty free form — I’ll usually have a few touchstone songs that I want to get out over the airwaves over the course of a show, but for the most part I’m just selecting songs I like somewhat randomly. Sometimes things come together better than I could have expected, and I feel this was the case tonight. As a DJ, it’s always fun mixing it up from regular tempo to double time, and I’m especially happy with the the triplet from the 3 Foot People tune to the Fracture & Neptune track, which moves smoothly from downtempo to drum’n’bass.
Those recent tracks from Large Professor, Q-tip, Elzhi and the Menahan Street Band are totally killing me, too. Enjoy.
No archive for this week due to technical difficulties, but here’s the playlist.
