DJ Cosm Interview
The Fat Beat Diet, March 31st

DJ Cosm - I stole this pic from ffwdweekly.com

This week, DJ Cosm drops by the studio to talk about his recent solo project. The DJ/Producer for local act Dragon Fli Empire has just dropped his debut full length, entitled Time and Space and popped in to chat about the album and his upcoming CD release party. The album features top notch beats and heavy hitting guests such as Craig G, Insight, Prince Po in addition to (relatively) local talent such Kazmega, Metawon, Cam the Wizzard, Touch, and Nato. Go buy it!

The Fat Beat Diet, March 24th

Definitely feeling in a mellow mood this week, a decision was made to keep the BPMs on the slower side of things for the most part, although I did flirt with some more uptempo stuff towards the middle of the show. Couldn’t really help myself because I’m loving the Sinbad remix of Ty’s Heart is Breaking so much recently. Managed to get myself back into relax mode by the end of the show though. Still, any show where I can play Massive Attack’s Teardrop (which holds special significance for me) and some Portishead is a pretty fun show in my books. Also, don’t sleep on the Jamie XX vs Gil Scott Heron collabo which started off the show – Personally I think the whole album is an improvement on Heron’s original.

The Drive Mix
The Fat Beat Diet, March 3rd

In March, I took a road trip down to southern Oregon for a couple of weeks. Staring down the barrel of an 18 hour drive, I figured I’d best make a mix to speed things along. Speed things along, indeed. This mix had me pushing my little jalopy much faster than I probably should have (this, and the latest work form Cobblestone Jazz also). Hopefully it can do the same for you.

The Fat Beat Diet Celebrates Black History Month

Recently, I was listening to Chris Read‘s 1989 mix as well as DJ Food’s 1989 mix. Chris Read, one of my favourite DJs, had recently put out this incredible retrospective of hip hop, spanning 28yrs and 800 tracks from 1979-2007 called The Diary. While “hip hop through the years mixe”s are not necessarily a new concept (heck, I think I played Jaguar Skillz? ?Hip Hop Odyssey‘ mix a few years back and included it as part of some Funding Drive bonus discs), I thought I’d revisit the concept for this year’s Black History month and hit you up with some hip hop through the years.

1989

A great year for hip hop, this was the Golden Era’s twilight years.

Another landmark year in hip hop hailed alternatively as the last great year in hip hop and the year hip hop was reborn.

RE-UP: RIP J Dilla

RIP James ‘J Dilla’ Yancey: February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006

On the anniversary of his death, I’d thought I’d re-up this mix I made when the news first started to sink in, five years ago.

Slop Press Mix: The Fat Beat Diet, January 20th 2011

This week, I happened to be out of town for the launch of Slop Press, a site headed up by a few friends which centers on food and food culture. One of the founders had asked me to put together a mix for the launch since the venue (Walrus in Vancouver) was too small for a DJ. No worries, I said, and proceded to make a mix full of as many food-referencing songs as I could. One the radio, you probably only managed to hear the first 55 minutes, but here it is in its full 75 minute, ahem, glory (glory is far too strong a word to describe this mix, but I hope you enjoy it anyways…)

The launch was a huge success and the place was completely packed for hours. The 2 food trucks catering the party were having trouples getting more than 6′ in the door before their trays were emptied. Definitely a fun time.

RJD2 Mini-spotlight

Ahead of the free RJD2 show at Olympic Plaza on January 15th, I thought I’d play some RJD2 at the start of the show. One of my favourite producers I’m a big fan of his wistful hip hop beats. I didn’t know how busy the show would be on acount of the positively frigid temperatures going on in Calgary, but thankfully, attendance was amazing — the place was packed. I can just picture the artist’s dread as he’s sitting on the plane and the pilot announces something along the lines of ‘…and current temperature in Calgary is a balmy -24 deg C…’ Calgary represented though, and RJD2 responded in kind. I would’ve liked to have seen more artists, but damned if I was spending more than one hour standing outside…

Anyways, after playing some RJD2 beats for half an hour, I had to hit you with some hip hop and funk.
